Fashion trends often come and go,
with some having a fleeting nature. However, certain styles possess enduring
elegance, while others strike a balance between accessibility and chic appeal.
Recently, HuffPost inquired with stylists about their least favored fashion trends in 2023, unveiling insights into the questionable looks dominating both runways and streets. Conversely, we also sought their opinions on styles they found enjoyable this year and anticipate witnessing more of in 2024. Explore their favorites below.
Quiet Luxury
Stylist Stephanie Stimmler
highlighted the enduring allure of quiet luxury in a world often dominated by
transient trends. Unlike fleeting fashion fads, quiet luxury is more than just
a trend; it's a philosophy embodying sophistication, quality, and meticulous
craftsmanship. This aesthetic celebrates enduring elegance, placing emphasis on
simplicity, minimalism, and exclusivity.

Stimmler commended the "back to basics" movement, drawing inspiration from esteemed fashion brands such as The Row, Jil Sander, Max Mara, Loro Piana, and Akris. This approach centers on foundational pieces that withstand the test of time, forming a sturdy base for a versatile and enduring wardrobe. To enhance this trend, the incorporation of sheer fabrics introduces a modern twist, adding depth and texture to the understated elegance of quiet luxury.
Barbiecore
Stylist and image consultant
Annette Harris expressed her enthusiasm for a particular fashion trend in 2023:
Barbiecore. She emphasized how, with the release of the Barbie movie, people,
irrespective of gender, embraced the style directive to channel their inner
bold Barbie persona, incorporating pops of pink or donning a head-to-toe pink
ensemble.

The vibrant pink trend was prominent throughout 2023, with Pantone designating Viva Magenta as the color of the year. Despite the impending shift to the year of Peach Fuzz, it appears probable that Barbie-inspired pink will continue to grace the fashion scene.
Sheer Done Right
Highlighting the enduring strength
of the see-through/sheer trend in 2023, Sharpe expressed her anticipation that
it would continue into 2024. From mesh paneling to entirely sheer dresses, both
runways and streets experienced a surge of sheer fashion.
Many celebrities, like Daisy Edgar-Jones and Olivia Rodrigo, embraced the sheer trend while still leaving some things to the imagination |
However, not all sheer moments are
equal.
Stimmler emphasized that the key to mastering this trend lies in its execution, favoring allure over exposure. Designers such as Valentino and Lanvin showcased the art of tasteful transparency in the Spring '23 runway shows. Stimmler appreciates the combination of sheer tops over textured tanks, full-coverage bras or bralettes, and fitted nude camisoles or sleeveless tops. It's about leaving a bit to the imagination, creating an alluring allure that sparks curiosity without compromising sophistication.
The Color Red
Sharing his perspective on trends,
stylist and fashion director Zadrian Smith expressed his appreciation for the
enthusiasm surrounding the color red during the fall and winter. He noted that
this year has witnessed a robust collection of trends, emphasizing their
accessibility without the necessity for mass consumption or participation in
ultra-fast fashion.

The prominence of "tomato girl fall" marked a significant moment, providing numerous avenues to embrace the red trend, ranging from lively sweaters to playful accessories.
Metallic Accessories
Expressing her enthusiasm for the
prevalent metallic movement this year, Sharpe highlighted the transformative
effect of adding a touch of metallic to shoes or bags, enhancing any outfit.

To embrace the metallic trend,
there's no need to don a head-to-toe gladiator chic ensemble; instead, focus on
incorporating metallic elements into accessories.
Above all, Sharpe encourages making choices that resonate authentically with individual preferences. She emphasizes that fashion and style can be enjoyable and experimental, citing the influence of Get Z in demonstrating how to have fun with fashion while disregarding strict adherence to trends. Sharpe underscores that fashion is an expression of individuality and personality, asserting that having a unique style is inherently trendy.
Adidas Sambas
According to Kendra Sharpe, a
wardrobe stylist and creative director, the comeback of the century this year
was the Adidas Sambas. She mentioned that "It-girls" across the board were eagerly acquiring them.

Sharpe asserts that these sneakers serve as the ideal casual footwear for any ensemble, a sentiment shared by celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence, Emily Ratajkowski, and Gigi Hadid.
Denim Skirts
Expressing her enthusiasm, Sharpe
shared her delight at the resurgence of denim skirts this year, being a devoted
denim enthusiast. She highlighted their versatility, suitable for both dressing
up and down, making them an excellent choice for creating a capsule wardrobe.

Despite the general appreciation
for denim-on-denim trends, some stylists, including Ashlyn Greer, a
professional stylist and co-founder of Fashivly, voiced reservations about
certain aspects. Greer specifically mentioned concerns about going too far into
the '00s era with denim boots and other accessories that seemed out of place in
the fabric.
