Paramount is gearing up to
revitalize the Top Gun franchise with plans for a third film. Co-writer of Top
Gun: Maverick, Ehren Kruger, is currently working on the script for this
potential new installment. Sources indicate that Joe Kosinski, the director of
Maverick, is also expected to return to direct the film. The goal is to bring
back Tom Cruise alongside his fellow next-generation co-stars Miles Teller and
Glen Powell.
Tom Cruise in 'Top Gun: Maverick' |
This development follows closely after Warner Bros. Discovery announced that Cruise had entered into a deal to both star in and produce films for Warners. However, it's crucial to note that this agreement is not exclusive. While Cruise's recent projects have mostly been with Paramount, he did not have a formal deal with the studio. Despite any perceptions of a competitive element in Cruise's recent deals, the groundwork for this Top Gun sequel has been quietly in progress since late fall.
As of now, Paramount has not
provided any comments on the matter.
The success of Maverick at the box office
in 2022 was remarkable, grossing $1.5 billion globally and earning praise from
Steven Spielberg, who credited Tom Cruise with rescuing the theatrical business
amid the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic. Maverick, released
decades after Tony Scott's 1986 Top Gun, played a significant role in
establishing Cruise as a prominent movie star.
While news of a new Top Gun movie
is exciting, it's important to note that its release is not imminent. Tom
Cruise is currently occupied with the eighth installment of the Mission:
Impossible series, slated for release in May 2025. Given the historical
timeline for Maverick's development, it will likely take some years before the
new Top Gun film takes flight. Nevertheless, recent developments underscore Cruise's
enduring popularity and the ongoing competition among studios for his
involvement in future projects.
