The Walt Disney Company, the NFL, and ESPN are teaming up to release another animated alternative broadcast of an upcoming NFL game, and this time, they’re going all out with “ESPN’s The Simpsons Funday Football.”

On December 9, Disney+ and ESPN+ will stream a Dallas Cowboys-Cincinnati Bengals game reimagined in The Simpsons’ iconic hometown of Springfield, with players transformed into animated characters inspired by the series on Fox and Disney+.

This broadcast marks the second year Disney+ will offer an animated version of an NFL game, but this year’s production is expanding in several ways. Unlike last year’s Toy Story-themed game, which aired on a Sunday morning, this year’s broadcast will be part of Monday Night Football, bringing it to a more prominent timeslot.

This Simpsons game also differs from last year’s production because it features a full roster of voice talent from the show. Last year’s game faced limitations due to Hollywood strikes, which restricted Disney’s access to actors from the films they’d typically utilize.

However, this year, The Simpsons cast—including Hank Azaria, Nancy Cartwright, Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, and Yeardley Smith—will voice pre-recorded segments and sketches (written by the Simpsons team) that will air before and during the game.

Some of these segments will feature interactions with players from both teams, as well as ESPN personalities like Stephen A. Smith and the Manning brothers, Peyton and Eli.

The alternate broadcast will have its own commentator booth as well, featuring animated versions of ESPN’s Mina Kimes, Dan Orlovsky, and Drew Carter calling the game.

Throughout the game, fans will see Bart Simpson taking to the field as a player for the Bengals, with Homer Simpson representing the Cowboys. Marge and Lisa Simpson will be shown interviewing players on the sidelines, while Maggie operates the SkyCam.

With this Simpsons-themed broadcast, ESPN will offer three versions of that week’s Monday Night Football broadcast. The traditional broadcast with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman will air on ESPN, ABC, and ESPN+, while the popular “Manningcast” with Peyton and Eli Manning will stream on ESPN2 and ESPN+. Meanwhile, the Simpsons version will stream on Disney+ and ESPN+.

This Simpsons broadcast will be the highest-profile live sports event to stream on Disney+. Disney acquired The Simpsons through its 2019 Fox acquisition, and the show brings in a younger male demographic, which aligns with the NFL’s target audience—making it a more fitting animated option compared to last year’s Toy Story theme.

While new episodes of The Simpsons still air on Fox—often seeing a ratings bump when the network has a Sunday NFL doubleheader—Disney+ has also streamed several shorts from the series and will host an exclusive holiday special in December.
