During an interview with internet personality Max Balegde, the Stranger Things star addressed the discussions on social media regarding her apparent shift from her British accent, as she now primarily resides in the United States.
"As an actor," Brown asserted, "I've grown up in the public eye and adapted to life in America. When
I'm on set, I'm focused on my craft and I adapt to the roles I play, which may
involve mimicking different accents."
She elaborated that the voices of
those around her, including her fiancé Jake Bongiovi, who is Jon Bon Jovi's
son, can influence her speech patterns. However, she noted that when she's in
England, her natural accent becomes more prominent.
"I can't help but pick up accents when I'm around my fiancé or people like Jimmy Fallon, who have a strong American accent. And when I'm in England, I tend to adopt that accent more," Brown explained. "It's not intentional, and I apologize if it bothers you, but I'm doing my best! I'm trying my best."
After Millie Bobby Brown appeared
on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this month, social media
users started commenting on what they perceived as a change in her accent
during the conversation.
"Some users noted that her British accent was barely noticeable,"
commented on a TikTok video, while another user observed, "she pronounces certain words like a Brit,
but the cadence she's using is so American."
However, some users defended her,
suggesting that people with accents are often encouraged to pronounce words
more clearly for better understanding. One user wrote, "I don’t think she is losing her accent, I
think it’s just for the interview."
