The writers strike impacted both the conclusion of the previous season and the beginning of season 49. The labor action concluded on Sept. 25, resulting in a mid-October start for SNL—featuring former cast member Pete Davidson as host—instead of the usual late September or early October premiere.
(The cast operates under a separate SAG-AFTRA contract from the one currently under strike, allowing them to perform without crossing picket lines.)
The show's cast remained unchanged from last season, with James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman being promoted from featured players to repertory players. Chloe Troast joined the cast as a featured player.
Here is The Hollywood Reporter's updated guide to the hosts and musical guests for season 49 of SNL:
Dec. 16: Jacob Elordi hosting with musical guest Reneé Rapp
Dec. 9: Adam Driver hosting with musical guest Olivia Rodrigo
Dec. 2: Emma Stone hosting for the fifth time with musical guest Noah Kahan
Nov. 29: Kate McKinnon returning as a first-time host for the Dec. 16 show, the final show before the holiday break, with musical guest Billie Eilish
Saltburn star Jacob Elordi made his SNL debut on Jan. 20, with musical guest Renée Rapp. Dakota Johnson and Justin Timberlake were scheduled for the Jan. 27 show. Ayo Edebiri, known for her role in The Bear and coming off her Emmy and Golden Globe wins, made her hosting debut on Feb. 3 with musical guest Jennifer Lopez.
Comedian Shane Gillis hosted SNL on Feb. 24, marking his return to the show years after being cut in 2019 for using racial and homophobic slurs during a podcast. He was joined by 21 Savage as the musical guest.
In March, Sydney Sweeney hosted the March 2 show, with musical guest Kacey Musgraves, followed by Josh Brolin and Ariana Grande a week later. On March 30, Ramy Youssef hosted with musical guest Travis Scott. Kristen Wiig, a former SNL regular, joined the Five-Timers Club in April, and Barbie Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling hosted for the third time.
