Grimes Issues Apology for Coachella Tech Woes: ‘Valuable Lessons Learned’

Grimes used social media to express regret for the technical difficulties that affected her Coachella performance over the weekend. The singer-songwriter faced challenges with equipment malfunctions during her Saturday show. These issues led to problems with the programming of her tracks at the mixing desk, forcing her to shout into the microphone for the latter part of her set.

"The cdjs were showing me bpms like 370 so I couldn't even mix manually by ear, and the front monitors were off. It was literally sonic chaos on my end, trying to guess how things sounded for you guys," she elaborated on X, formerly known as Twitter.

In her statement, Grimes revealed that she had outsourced some aspects of her performance "to save time."

"I wanted to come back really strong, and usually, I handle every aspect of my show myself. To save time, this was one of the first times I've outsourced essential things like rekordbox bpms and letting someone else organize the tracks on the SD card, etc.," she wrote. "I had a bad feeling beforehand not having run everything through the cdjs myself, and though I flagged it, I wasn't insistent."

Grimes further stated that she would "personally organize all the files next week" and ensure such issues do not occur again.

"I've spent months on this show, making music and visuals," she added, expressing that she was "not in the best mood" after the malfunctions. "Next week will be flawless; everything will run through my hands. Some good lessons learned. Bless y'all."

Coachella kicked off its first of two weekends on Saturday at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. In addition to headliners like Lana Del Rey, Tyler, the Creator, Doja Cat, and No Doubt, a diverse lineup of artists including Peso Pluma, Blur, Ice Spice, J Balvin, Jhené Aiko, Lil Uzi Vert, Sabrina Carpenter, Tyla, Skepta, Suki Waterhouse, Sublime, Jon Batiste, Carin León, John Summit, Bebe Rexha, Reneé Rapp, Victoria Monét, and more will take the stage.

Earlier this month, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that YouTube, streaming the music festival for the 12th year, introduced "Multiview" streams. This feature allows users to watch up to four different stages simultaneously.
