The presentation revealed that Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey, is struggling with depression and poor physical condition following the events of Sonic 2. However, he regains his confidence by creating Shadow the Hedgehog, a character introduced in the video games in Sonic Adventure 2 (2001).
Shadow is portrayed as the antithesis of Sonic, characterized by a darker and edgier persona, while possessing similar powers to the hero.
Paramount's Sonic movie franchise began with 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog, which exceeded expectations by grossing $319 million globally. The film was a surprise success in the video game adaptation genre, which had previously struggled at the box office.
This was followed by Sonic 2 in 2022, which grossed $404 million globally. Director Jeff Fowler has been at the helm of all three installments, with Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic and James Marsden portraying Tom Wachowski, a human friend of Sonic's.
In recent years, Keanu Reeves has been a prominent figure in blockbuster films. He most recently appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4 and prior to that, reprised his iconic role of Neo in 2021's The Matrix: Resurrections. Up next, he will be seen in Aziz Ansari's Good Fortune, where he portrays a guardian angel.
Additionally, he will have a small role as the popular assassin in John Wick Presents: Ballerina, a spinoff starring Ana De Armas.
