Sigourney Weaver in Negotiations to Join 'The Mandalorian & Grogu' in New 'Star Wars' Chapter

Sci-fi icon Sigourney Weaver, known for her roles battling face-hugging aliens and confronting colonizers on exotic planets, is now poised to enter the Star Wars universe, a realm of stormtroopers and intergalactic bounty hunters.

Weaver is currently in negotiations to join the cast of The Mandalorian & Grogu, the first Star Wars movie to enter production since 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The news, confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, marks a significant step for the franchise.

The feature will be directed by The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau and is slated to begin filming later this year. Favreau will also produce the film alongside Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm chief creative officer Dave Filoni.

The Mandalorian debuted in November 2019 as Disney+'s flagship show, introducing the character affectionately dubbed Baby Yoda, who quickly became a pop culture sensation. Pedro Pascal leads the series as Din Djarin, also known as The Mandalorian, a warrior who initially reluctantly cares for Grogu. The show's third season premiered last year and has spawned several spinoffs, including The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka, which is currently in development for a second season.

Pascal is expected to reprise his role as Djarin, although the extent of his involvement is uncertain due to his busy schedule. He is set to begin filming The Fantastic Four for Marvel Studios, a Disney sibling, starting at the end of July.

Weaver, a three-time Academy Award nominee, is most famously associated with the Alien franchise, having starred in Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror classic and James Cameron's 1986 sequel, Aliens. Her portrayal of the fearless Ripley, a maternal figure fighting monstrous foes, has been groundbreaking, paving the way for future female action heroes in cinema.

Weaver later reunited with Cameron for the Avatar series, appearing in Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, with additional films in the franchise on the horizon.

In addition to her work in the Alien and Avatar franchises, Weaver achieved another pop culture milestone with her roles in the Ghostbusters movies of the 1980s. She returned to the franchise, reprising her character Dana Barrett, in the 2021 reboot, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Weaver is represented by UTA.

The news of Weaver's involvement was first reported by The InSneider newsletter.
