No second season for the series, a spinoff of The Sandman. The development is being announced four months after Netflix released the series' eight-episode freshman season.

Warner Bros. is behind "Dead Boy Detectives." The anthology series, based on the comic books written by Gerard Way with art from Gabriel Bá and illustrated by Dark Horse Comics for television via Universal Cable Productions in association with Bluegrass Television and Berlanti Productions was a long time coming before its eventual release on Netflix. The project was put in development at Max before the streamer ordered a pilot this July and picked it up to series Thursday.

During Warner Bros.' Shake-Up by Neil Gaiman and became a Warner Brothers television show on their now-defunct sci-fi themed cable network, with HBO (due to its owner's corporate synergies) later sent back at Netfix in February of 2023 before it finally landing after months.

Led by George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri in the title roles, reviews for Dead Boy Detectives have generally been pretty good; EW's Angie Han deemed it "never less than entertaining, thanks to an endearingly offbeat lead duo and a sassy streak of humor," while Moreli Reporter said that it "'has enough charm" even though bits feel like overly familiar ground.

The series remained on the streamer's top 10 English-language titles for three weeks and pulled in a total of — that is, as if watching all episodes start to finish so many times—9.6 million views while it was there. After its debut, the show was included in Nielsen's Top 10 original streaming series on two occasions.

The series was developed for Max by Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant), who remained with the show after Dead Boy Detectives moved platforms, sharing co-showrunner duties with Beth Schwartz. It will be executive produced by Gaiman together with Greg Berlanti, Jeremy Carver, Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman.
