The studio has acquired the film pitch, which is currently in early development, with Will Speck and Josh Gordon set to direct and produce. EGOT winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will create original music and produce through their Ampersand production banner.
According to sources at Reporter, the movie will include a few original musical numbers reminiscent of Barbie.
The screenplay will be written by The Lucas Bros. (known for Judas and the Black Messiah) and Max Reisman, focusing on the game's depiction of 19th-century pioneer life as it follows a covered wagon train heading west. Created in 1971, Oregon Trail gained cult status among American schoolchildren in the 1990s as one of the first educational computer games permitted in schools, famous for its darkly humorous storylines involving broken arms, typhoid, and dysentery.
Caroline Fraser will produce for HarperCollins Productions, which owns the rights to the video game franchise, alongside Kevin K. Vafi.
Speck, Gordon, Pasek, and Paul recently collaborated on the Sony film Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. Speck and Gordon, represented by CAA and Sloane Offer, are also known for their work on Blades of Glory and Office Christmas Party.
Pasek and Paul recently won an Emmy for their contributions to the final season of Only Murders in the Building. They are represented by CAA, Kraft-Engel Management, and Schreck Rose.
The Lucas Bros., nominated for an Oscar for their screenplay for Judas and the Black Messiah, are represented by Fourth Wall Management, UTA, and Hansen Jacobson. Reisman is also represented by Fourth Wall Management, UTA, and Jackoway Austen.
