At Amazon's first-ever upfront presentation, Amazon MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke, Witherspoon, and even Bruiser the dog announced a series order for the show. Titled Elle, the series will delve into the origin story of Elle Woods during her high school years in the 1990s. This project has been in development since early April.

Witherspoon will executive produce through her Hello Sunshine production company, alongside series creator and showrunner Laura Kittrell (Insecure, Amazon Freevee's High School), Hello Sunshine's Lauren Neustadter and Lauren Kisilevsky, and Marc Platt, the producer of the original Legally Blonde films.

The series' logline describes it as follows: "Elle follows Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film."

In a statement, Witherspoon expressed her excitement about the series, saying, "I truly couldn’t be more excited about this series! Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that? I’m extremely grateful to the incredible teams at Prime Video and Hello Sunshine — along with our amazing writer Laura Kittrell — for making this dream of mine come true. Legally Blonde is back!"

Elle continues Hello Sunshine's collaboration with Prime Video, following their work on Daisy Jones and the Six and the film Something From Tiffany's for the streamer.

Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios, expressed his excitement about the project, stating, "One of the most quotable, iconic, and beloved characters that is ingrained in the fabric of Hollywood history has to be Elle Woods, and we are honored to bring her origin story to our global Prime Video customers. Reese and Hello Sunshine’s vision for this series, coupled with Laura Kittrell’s winning voice, made this show completely undeniable."

Elle will be produced by Hello Sunshine and Amazon MGM Studios (MGM also produced the original films). Casting for the teenage version of Elle Woods has not yet been announced.

Hello Sunshine is represented by CAA and Hansen Jacobson, while Kittrell is represented by UTA and Mosaic.
